Poops in a diaper-When your child will only poop in a pull up, not the potty - ChildrensMD

We put a pull-up on him and THEN he goes. Is there anything to help speed his toilet training along? Thank you. Actually, no. Not wanting to poop in the toilet is a very common problem.

Potty training? We started when our daughter was 20 months old and began expressing a clear interest in using the potty — sitting on her kiddie toilet, using associated words. This, the book says, is a sign that a child can learn something socially, as opposed to something that comes naturally like walking.

Also, the book suggests that children can be potty trained in three days, which sounded wonderful to us. So we went for it, with some success.

The kid spent a weekend Donald Duck-ing it, wearing a shirt but nothing below the waist, and we would rush her to the potty whenever it seemed like time. We read. We sang songs. We played games inside despite the nice spring weather. We made a big show of putting away her diapers and introducing undies. And then we returned to life.

Our daughter turned 2 in May. In July, we moved from Brooklyn to Austin, taking her out of her day care and letting her stay home for about six weeks while my wife and I worked from home.

Then we put her into a new day care. Unsatisfied with it, we moved her again after roughly three weeks. There, she spent her days in a STEM-focused, somewhat loosey-goosey day care, where she developed a habit of avoiding defecating in the toilet. At first, it was just one of those things.

But it never seemed to get better. My wife and I would dread pickup, with its inevitable clear plastic bags of poop-streaked underwear. The school would text us photos throughout the day; we would ignore whatever activity our daughter was up to and focus on whether she still had on the pants we had sent her to school in.

Offer pull-ups when she seems like she might want to go! Try mineral oil! Or try nothing, and just let her figure it out! There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the accidents, no pattern to uncover. We could travel without incident, but a short trip to the playground might be cut even shorter by an accident.

By August, we decided to take her to the doctor, where they took an X-ray of her abdomen and gave us a diagnosis: constipation. Like, serious constipation — the long-term kind where the stool hardens within the body and becomes painful to pass. This pain leads a child to fear going to the bathroom, which then exacerbates the problem.

Eventually, the digestive system becomes desensitized, and softer stool starts to leak without warning, something called fecal incontinence or encopresis, which a study from National Institutes of Health notes is often linked to a marked loss of self-esteem and other behavioral issues. Turns out she was right, and the diagnosis explained why she was clearly ashamed of what was happening but helpless to do anything about it. This is apparently a common situation for children in new schools, according to the Harvard School of Medicine.

Kids are afraid of using a new bathroom or going alone ; they hold it; it backs up; their body gets out of practice. If this goes on long enough, some kids even start to vomit. It should have ended there. But my wife and I clearly underestimated how long it would take. Thus began a cycle of success followed by regression. I am ashamed to admit we blamed our daughter. We tried treats and rewards. We tried holding her responsible for cleaning up after accidents. We lost our tempers and, slowly, our minds.

Every once in a while, we would remind ourselves how long we had been trying to live without the constant low-level fear of an accident interrupting our day.

As any parenting book will tell you, the best way to potty train is to avoid pressure, and to be consistent. We failed on both of those fronts. It was brutal. And yet, she succeeded on so many other fronts: counting up to and writing her own name before the other kids in her class.

We resolved to do it for months, rather than weeks, no longer fearing a dependency. In a sense, the book was right. She recently broke her finger going down a slide. So this was our first glimpse into how our child learns. But it was also a glimpse into how we learn as parents. With potty training, maybe she was telling us the same thing — to be patient, to be kind, to listen. Paul L.

I was delighted and relieved. Knowledge is power in the baby poop department. During the first day of life, your little newborn is going to make a blackish, tar-like mess called meconium.

During the second 24 hours, baby should have at least two poopy diapers. When the baby is three to five days old, she should make at least three poopy diapers each day. Size also matters when it comes to baby poop. Moms in the know also watch for gradual color changes.

Small amounts of mucus are normal too. If a baby is not gaining weight or seems unhappy much of the time, mom can take a closer look at the green diapers. If overabundant milk is the issue, baby will probably be fussy and may not gain as much weight as expected.

Talk with a La Leche League Leader or lactation consultant for ideas to help with overabundant milk or food allergies. A lactation consultant can help find ways to increase milk supply.

Until then, happy diapering. Mohrbacher, N. Breastfeeding Answers Made Simple. Green Poop — When Should you Worry? New York: Ballantine Books, ; 94, , , What about texture? References Mohrbacher, N.
